“The worse comment: it will not hart… When going to the dentist we tell our child sentences as it won’t hart or don’t worry, it will be nothing we only alert him and make treatment more difficult, for they will arrive frightened. It is good and necessary to inform, … but trying not to frighten. Let us explain where do we go and why, but as if it was a routine, as going shopping, to the cinema or for a walk.”

Dental care must start soon. It is important to check children’s teeth since they are 4 or 5 years all, provided nothing is perceived before. Temporal molars must be kept until 10 to 13 years, and loosing them too soon might affect permanent tooth underneath. In case of loss, it might be necessary to place a space retainer to avoid neighbour teeth invading the space where other teeth will later erupt. Only exceptionally we need sedation or drugs to control anxiety in children at the dentist. Dental treatment is not traumatic for them. Children are excellent patients, who tolerate very weell the treatments, probably better than most adults. They only need to receive good explanation of what is to be done and to see how it will be/is done (“tell, show, do”).
